Maidstone is the county town of Kent, England, and is the largest town in the county. Maidstone is a historically significant town located 32 miles (51 kilometres) east of London. The Medway River passes through the town, connecting it to Rochester and the Thames Estuary. As the agricultural county of Kent, often known as the Garden of England, the river carried most of the town’s trade in the past. Settlement in the area can be traced back to before the Stone Age. In 2019, the town, which is part of the Maidstone borough, had a population of around 100,000 people. The town’s economy has changed from heavy manufacturing to light industry and services since WWII.
